Start with the room

Measure width, depth and height, plus door, cabinet and baseboard clearances. Confirm water, drain, electrical, gas and vent locations. For stacked units, verify the approved stacking kit and ceiling clearance.

Measure the dryer vent path too. A long or restricted vent can make even a great dryer feel slow.

Top-load versus front-load

Top-load washers

Easy standing access and familiar loading. Compare wash action, usable tub depth and whether shorter users can reach the bottom comfortably.

Front-load washers

Efficient use of water and space, with stacking options. Door care, routine cleaning and correct detergent use are important.

CAPACITY TIPCompare the loads you actually wash—comforters, work clothes, towels or small frequent loads. Published cubic feet alone does not tell the whole story.

Match the dryer correctly

The dryer should comfortably handle the washer’s largest normal load. Confirm gas or electric power, outlet type, vent route and total vent length. Poor venting can increase drying time regardless of the dryer you buy.

Questions worth asking

  • How long do normal cycles take?
  • Which features will we use every week?
  • Can the machine be serviced locally?
  • Are pedestals, stacking kits, hoses, cords and vents included?

Laundry questions

Should washer and dryer capacity match?

The dryer generally needs enough room to tumble the washer’s largest load freely. A local specialist can help match usable capacities.

Is a simple washer more reliable?

Simplicity can reduce components, but build quality, use, maintenance, model design and service support all matter.
